Daily Operations Knowledge: What to watch for renewals, status, space, and logs
Currently learning SIN1 · Lecture 23 of 285. Make the website stable and usable
Operations and maintenance are about keeping the website usable. Check first, then judge; handle stopping, restarting, deleting, and disk cleanup with caution.
Operations first refers to daily supervision
Operations (maintaining the website and servers running smoothly) is like looking after a small shop that's already open: the space is still rented, the equipment is working, the cabinets aren't full, any issues are recorded, and there are ways to restore them. No need for beginners to learn complex monitoring on day one. By first checking the website, panels, expiration dates, backups, and hosting, you can identify many common issues.
Let's start with these five daily items
- Check if the website can be opened, and whether the article images and key buttons are functioning properly.
- When will the server and domain name expire, and what is the current renewal status?
- Check whether the website's related software is running, and if there have been any recent abnormal changes.
- Check if there are obvious abnormalities in disk space, memory, or CPU usage.
- Check if recent backups exist, and if there are new prompts in the issue log.
When visitors fail to access the site, first confirm whether it is a single page, an entire site, or multiple sites, and then arrange troubleshooting. Opening the panel does not mean all WordPress functions are working.
CPU, memory, and disk should not be confused
The CPU is the ability to process tasks, memory is the temporary space while working, and the disk is where data is stored long-term. If the disk is full, uploads, logs, and database writes may fail; Memory shortage may affect program performance. The inode (the file system used to remember the information entry for each file) is also limited. Many very small files may fill up entries, even if the capacity is not yet full. You don't have to calculate it yourself; let the AI report both space and document entries simultaneously.
What are stop, restart, and reload?
Stop: Stop the service. Restart: Stop and restart again, which may cause temporary effects. Overload: Causes the service supporting this operation to reread the configuration, with the specific impact varying by service. Don't treat a restart as a cure-all. Multiple websites may share Nginx or databases, and stopping it affects other sites. Closing the browser window in the viewing panel usually does not stop these services.
Identify the purpose before cleaning
caches (temporarily stored for speed) and old temporary files, some of which can be regenerated according to rules; But databases, uploaded images, running versions, production configurations, and unique backups are business data.
First, check the capacity, inodes, read/write status, and sources of usage, and explain which directories are growing. Do not delete databases, business uploads, current programs, keys, or unique backups. Only clear clear paths for confirmed use, renewability, or precise paths beyond the established retention period, and specify the space to be released and restoration methods.
Do not implement vague requests like "delete all large files" or "clear the website directory." After cleaning with AI, you need to check your hosting and website again, not just report how many files have been deleted.
How to use logs
Log time, requests, or errors. Give the timing of website issues to AI and let it find the corresponding records; There's no need to post the entire log in the group at once. Logs may contain addresses and private information, and sharing them may be desensitized before sharing. Old logs are processed according to rotation rules (separating new and old records and managing them according to retention period). Don't delete the only record that can locate the current fault just to save space.
Minimum daily inspection requirements
Please check the blog for access, critical services, disk and inode, recent backups, and new errors. First, provide the conclusion and items to be addressed; under normal circumstances, only review them. If there are any changes, explain the scope of impact and recovery methods, and verify the public website after the operation.
Record the inspection results as the date, symptoms, and handling status. Renewal is operated by the merchant account. The API managing the server doesn't mean it can automatically renew for you.
